On February 21, Viacheslav Revin, a Russian gay activist and refugee in the US, protested at the National Press Club, Washington, DC, where a new organization named Coalition for Family Values, “confronting LGBT agenda”, was announced in a press conference featuring antigay crusader Scott Lively.

“The coalition is being organized by Dr. Scott Lively of Defend the Family International, based in Springfield, Massachusetts, and Peter LaBarbera of Americans for Truth About Homosexuality (AFTAH), based outside Chicago, Illinois – with the assistance of other existing pro-family groups and leaders in the United States and abroad. The first action of the coalition was to issue a statement of support for the Russian pro-family laws of 2013 and 2014 – e.g., the prohibition of pro-homosexual propaganda to minors — and to urge other nations of the world to follow the Russian example”, said in the official announcement of the meeting.

Revin disrupted Scott Lively’s presentation and made a statement with a help of Ellen Sturtz translating his speech into English:

Homophobia is a first step toward dictatorship! Putin is a dictator who condemned to death thousands of orphaned children by banning foreign adoptions. Putin is a corrupted thief who invents scapegoats and deflects attention from his crimes. His latest invention is the anti-gay law, so gays in modern Russia feel like jews back in the USSR. Declaring support for Putin means denying the democracy and demanding racial segregation. This is what Putin doing in Russia now in regards to gays and migrant workers from Central Asia.

Revin also thanks Leah Brown for her help holding a protest banner saying “Stop killing us” during his speech. The two activists were ejected from the press conference shortly after.

The statement from Linda Harvey, president of conservative Christian organization “Mission America”, a member of the new Coalition, mentions recent Russian antigay laws and stresses that the Coalition is created to “confront and overcome the ‘LBGT’ worldwide agenda” which, in her opinion, includes “homosexual indoctrination of children”.

“We applaud the Russian government for their foresight in heading off aggresive and child-endangering ‘LGBT’ activism targeting youth… Our next generation in the US is being deliberately corrupted through such wayward guidance from deviant adults. We applaud the steps Russia is taking to ensure this is not the path for their students, and we encourage more countries to make the same wise choice, to say ‘no’ to homosexual activism”, the statement concludes.

LGBT activist Ellen Sturtz said that there is an opinion that we do not need to give attention to organizations and meetings like these, however, they need to be stopped, and in order to counter hatred, we are forced to make their activities public.
